Xujiahui: Consumption stimulus plan works in Shanghai

During the May Day holiday from May 1 to May 5, the overall sales volume at the 11 shopping malls in Xujiahui commercial area in Shanghai reached about 225 million yuan ($31 million), a year-on-year increase of 79.2 percent.

Shanghai Xujiahui Center (Group) Co Ltd, the organizer of the marketing activity, increased its market input this year. On the day before the May Day holiday, it offered 80,000 group buying coupons with almost "no limit" to consumers.

The coupons were snapped up in two hours in the morning, boosting the confidence of major shopping malls in the commercial area.

In the six days from April 30 to May 5, Xujiahui commercial area released 251,000 group buying coupons to consumers, and 246,000 of them were used, with total sales of 27 million yuan.

There are two main types of coupons. With the one for retail, consumers can enjoy a 55 percent discount. The one for food and beverages offers a 55 yuan coupon that buys worth 100 yuan of products.
