Shanghai will promote the development of a legal service industry in Lin-gang Special Area of China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone, according to a news release on May 21.

The 11 policies cover five areas: an institution settlement award, office housing support, talent protection and convenience, a high-end legal service award, and other support measures.

At present, Lin-gang Special Area is the only area in China where an overseas arbitration institution can set up a business organization.

According to the policies, a one-time special award of one million yuan ($140,000) shall be given to international commercial maritime arbitration, mediation and other dispute resolution institutions established in Lin-gang Special Area.

A one-time special grant of 200,000 yuan will be given toward the establishment of other legal service institutions in the special area, such as notarization, judicial authentication and overseas legal identification.

There are also grants for other institutions, such as law firms and institutions established by a central State organ.

Additionally, Lin-gang Special Area provides life services, direct economic contribution grants, and entry and exit convenience for legal talents.
