The city of Shanghai in East China on July 31 held a mobilization meeting on its goal to build an international consumption center with global influence, attractiveness, and competitiveness by the end of the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25).

According to officials, Shanghai will form a hub integrating global consumption resources, build a global consumer goods distribution center, amplify the spillover effect of the China International Import Expo, continuously enhance the influence of the May 5 Shopping Festival, and expand the opening of the consumption-related service industry.

The city will also focus on the cultivation of new local brands and the innovation of time-honored brands.

Commerce Minister Wang Wentao attended the meeting and spoke highly of Shanghai's efforts to build landmark business circles, cultivate and attract brands, and optimize the consumption environment.

He said that the Ministry of Commerce will offer its full support to Shanghai's work to build an international consumption center.
