Shanghai city in East China on Sept 28 released the lists of its top 100 FIEs – or foreign invested enterprises – in four categories – sales revenue, export-import value, tax contribution and job creation – in 2020 at a gala presentation ceremony.

The event comes in the wake of the implementation last year of the Foreign Investment Law, which officially established a foreign investment information reporting system. By the end of August 2021, a total of 61,090 foreign-invested enterprises in Shanghai had been involved in the annual foreign investment report.

Based on the report, a total of 257 foreign-invested enterprises – after eliminating the repeat entries – were listed in the Top 100 FIEs lists.

The operating income of the companies on the lists reportedly accounted for 35.61 percent of the total operating income of the businesses involved in the annual report on foreign investment in the city.

Of the listed enterprises, 57 were identified as regional headquarters and 28 as research and development centers.

From the regional distribution of the enterprises, a total of 142 of the listed enterprises are located in the Pudong New Area, 120 of which are registered in the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone.

In terms of the countries and regions of the 257 foreign investors, the number of enterprises from the United States, Japan and Germany were in the top three.
