The second World Laureates Forum took place at Dishui Lake in Lin-gang Special Area, Pudong New Area, Shanghai, on Oct 29, gathering nearly 70 world's top scientists and more than 100 outstanding young scientists.

The forum focused on basic research, international cooperation and youth development.

Lin-gang will further integrate into global scientific and technological innovation systems, promoting industrial upgrading through science and innovation.

Theoretical breakthroughs will greatly expand the breadth of practical applications. Lin-gang Special Area is to tackle technological bottlenecks in key industries, such as integrated circuits, artificial intelligence (AI), biomedicine, aviation and aerospace, new energy and the internet of vehicles, intelligent manufacturing and high-end equipment.

China's first World Laureates Association (WLA) Community was inaugurated in Lin-gang in 2018, with the aim of gathering the world's top scientists and technological resources to connect with China's huge application market.

According to Roger Kornberg, president of WLA, apart from the community, WLA International Joint Laboratory and other key projects were announced at the forum, with the aim of establishing a base capable of industrial transfers and transformation, including clinical trials, small trials, pilot trials and scale production.

So far, several top-notch Nobel laureates have joined the base. The projects involve biomedicine, AI, new energy, new materials, quantum science and other frontier research fields. It is understood that the laboratory base will also assist the WLA Community to set up a bank of cutting-edge technology and initiate a fund for the development of scientists.

"We will actively recruit outstanding scientists from Europe, the United States, Israel and other countries, and actively attract Chinese scientists and research teams studying abroad to start businesses back home," said Liu Jiaping, chairman of Lingang Group. Domestic universities and research institutes will be encouraged to build new laboratories in the WLA Community, undertaking domestic research projects and exploring new models of joint research and development by domestic and foreign research teams.

High-end talents are the foundation for the development of key industries. Young talents define the future excellence of our industries. The landing of the WLA Community in Lin-gang Special Area also provides a long-acting space for young scientists to communicate with the world's top scientists and support their growth.
