This year, the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce along with nine other Shanghai government departments implemented policies to support the development of the city's nighttime economy.

"2020 will be the final year of the three-year 'shopping in Shanghai' plan. Authorities are still trying to bring Shanghai's nighttime consumption up to the highest international standards. The nighttime economy should not only become a way to promote the sustainable development of Shanghai's economy, but it should also contribute to creating a better life for residents," said a person in charge at the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce.

An overall plan to promote development of the nighttime economy in Shanghai, with the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce taking the lead, will be laid out in 2020.

A series of festivals, light shows, and other recreational activities are expected to further spur nighttime consumption. In addition, landmarks will be created to host performances and concerts.
