Shanghai port is still number one in trade volume. The container throughput of Shanghai port, which totaled 43.3 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) last year, has ranked first in the world for 10 consecutive years.

It is reported that the container throughput of the Yangshan Deep-Water Port, the world's largest automated cargo terminal, reached a record 19.08 million TEUs in 2019, a year-on-year increase of 7.59 percent and 45.7 percent of the Shanghai port volume.

In 2019, there were more than 9,100 vessels at entry and exit points, an increase of 3.65 percent year-on-year, and 219,000 entering and exiting passengers, an increase of 5.34 percent year-on-year.

The port has become an important energy supply station in the Yangtze River Delta region.

In 2019, natural gas terminals berthed 66 ships, up 24.5 percent year-on-year, with a total discharge of 3.82 million tons, an increase of 20.5 percent year-on-year, accounting for more than 50 percent of Shanghai's total gas supply.

At the same time, Yangshan Deep-Water Port provides natural gas transfer service for Zhejiang province and maintains a natural gas emergency mutual guarantee mechanism with Jiangsu province, playing an important role in the connectivity of the Yangtze River Delta.

During the second China International Import Expo (CIIE), the port conducted trial intelligent operations. Relying on the 5G system, the unmanned container project will further improve the traffic capacity of Donghai Bridge, the fourth phase of Yangshan Deep Water Port and the transit speed of containers.

The port successively rolled out a serious of regulation including an online application service that saves nearly 30 minutes per ship, and a forward service that last year saved millions in delivery costs for the four oil rigs exported.
