Shanghai's entertainment industry saw a spending boom during the Shanghai May 5 Shopping Festival, with orders spiking by 249 percent, ranking first in China, according to a report by Meituan Dianping, a leading e-commerce service provider.

"The younger generation plays a key role in new experiences and new consumption," said an industry insider. "They have promoted the development of numerous new forms of business and services in Shanghai. According to the data, young consumers love to experiment, and this can stimulate consumption."

Compared with cash payments, handing out coupons can more effectively shore up entertainment consumption. Meituan issued 1.2 billion consumer subsidies, covering dozens of local living services including catering, leisure and entertainment, the beauty industry, hotels, local scenic spots and cultural entertainment.

The number of catering orders during the hopping festival ranks second in China, as does the number of takeaway orders. The number of leisure and entertainment orders ranks first in China, while the number of ticket orders in scenic spots and the number of flash purchase orders are both second.

During the May Day holiday, entertainment consumption in Shanghai rose significantly.

The most popular take-out dishes in Shanghai are affordable snacks and fast food, drinks and Sichuan cuisine. However, take-outs from name-brand restaurants were also popular during the May Day holiday.

During the holiday, new patterns of entertainment business emerged, stimulating young people in Shanghai to be adventurous. Orders of kart driving shot up 116-fold, orders at archery halls increased 33-fold, and climbing experiences increased 18-fold compared with the 2019 May Day holiday.
