In 2020, the development environment for Shanghai's private economy continued to improve. The added value of Shanghai's private economy reached 1.11 trillion yuan ($172.53 billion), an increase of 1 percent on the previous year.

The added value of the private economy accounted for 28.7 percent of the city's GDP in 2020 – 2.3 percentage points higher than the previous year. The total revenue of the main businesses in private industry above a designated size – enterprises with annual business revenue of 20 million yuan or more – reached 732.81 billion yuan, up 0.4 percent year-on-year.

The operating income of private service enterprises above a designated size reached 1.44 trillion yuan, up 2.5 percent year-on-year.

Retail sales of private consumer goods reached 379.81 billion yuan, down 0.1 percent year-on-year, accounting for 23.8 percent of the total retail sales of consumer goods in Shanghai in 2020, an increase of 0.5 percentage points over the previous year.
