Shanghai's Century Square upgrades to be top commercial hub
The revamped Century Square in East China's Shanghai is set to open by the 2023 Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day in the run-up from Sept 29 to Oct 6, after almost three years of renovation.
The renewal project aims to transform Nanjing Road, where Central Square is located, into a world-class commercial district. It's an important part of Shanghai's efforts to become an international shopping and retail city.
The commercial complex on the north side of Century Square has undergone renovations to highlight Nanjing Road's international brands, trendy businesses and younger customer base.
Two sections on East Nanjing Road are transforming to create new cultural and commercial experiences. No 626-636 will feature specialty dining, themed restaurants, museums and other immersive cultural offerings.
Meanwhile, No 558 will become a carefully curated, wide-ranging commercial complex with semi-open architecture. The renovated space will feature a new business model for brand launches, trendy displays and pop-up events.
What's more, well-known brands such as American ice cream brand Haagen-Dazs and THE BOXX – a new co-working space equipped with 5G communications, artificial intelligence and holographic projections technology – are set to make their mark on Nanjing Road.
Haagen-Dazs is due to open a concept innovation store to celebrate the brand and the city of Shanghai. THE BOXX, on the other hand, will offer an array of digital performing arts content – including multimedia digital light shows, visual art, electronic music and virtual digital exhibitions – all aimed at providing a special, appealing and immersive cultural experience.
