Shanghai Customs reported a surge in cross-border e-commerce exports last year, with East China's Shanghai processing a record 440 million declarations – nearly double the figure from the previous year.

What's more, the total value of exports topped 85 billion yuan ($11.87 billion).

In addition, from the start of 2024, Shanghai has consolidated its position as a pivotal global gateway for promoting Chinese goods through cross-border e-commerce.

The daily peak of cross-border e-commerce exports in the year to date has soared past 2 million declarations, representing substantial growth compared with the 1.2 million daily average witnessed for the same period in 2023.

Key players in the performance are said to include e-commerce giants Shein, Pinduoduo and Douyin, whose export declarations through Shanghai experienced an exceptional growth of over 10 times for all of  2023.

Collectively, these platforms contributed to more than 30 percent of the total cross-border e-commerce export declarations, signifying an era of exponential growth.

In response to this flourishing industry, Shanghai Pudong International Airport Customs implemented strategic regulatory reforms, optimizing processes for greater efficiency.

The result has been a much faster flows of data, reducing operational burdens for companies. Customs clearance information is now delivered within five minutes of a single e-commerce shipment declaration, facilitating the swift transportation of goods via flights.
