Shanghai accelerates green aviation fuel development
Air transport support services company Shanghai Airport (Group) Co Ltd – which operates Pudong and Hongqiao international airports in East China's Shanghai – recently signed cooperation agreements with a raft of organizations to accelerate the development of new energy industries and build a green aviation fuel supply chain.
The focus is on promoting the application of Sustainable Aviation Fuel, or SAF, in the civil aviation sector.
SAF – primarily produced from waste oils, agricultural and forestry residues and urban waste – can reduce carbon emissions by up to 85 percent compared with traditional fossil fuels throughout its lifecycle.
Shanghai Airport (Group) Co has been collaborating with China Eastern Airlines and China Aviation Oil (Singapore) Corporation Ltd to research policies, business processes and customer demands related to SAF.
The group plans to seek policy support for SAF sales, storage, refueling and bonded operations, while improving infrastructure and industry certifications for SAF refueling at airports.
The company has also been actively pursuing green development strategies, establishing top-level design documents and accelerating key project implementation.
Recent achievements include building an energy and carbon management platform, expanding the use of new energy equipment and vehicles and developing hydrogen energy demonstration projects.
In 2023, both Shanghai Pudong and Hongqiao airports were awarded the highest three-star "Dual Carbon Airport" rating.
